Nanomaterials Research Group @ Yildiz Technical University Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department
Our team of four material scientists focuses on the synthesis of metal oxide, carbide, and nitride compounds as nanostructures using sol-gel and hydrothermal methods. These techniques give precise control over the chemical content, size, and shape of the nanostructures. These techniques could be used to create nanoparticles, nanofibers, nanotubes, and nanosheets by modifying the crystal formation mechanism.
The resultant nanostructures could be utilized to create radiation shielding materials, biocompatible materials, photocatalytic materials, electrode materials for energy storage, and high-strength composites for high-temperature applications. We use consolidation techniques including melt compounding or hot pressing, electrospray, and electrospinning for polymer-based composites and slip casting, pressureless sintering, spark plasma sintering, and electrophoretic deposition for ceramic-based composites. Performance tests on the produced nanocomposites for energy storage, radiation shielding, hydrogen production, and photocatalytic efficacy.
Our group leader Professor Dr. Cengiz KAYA was included in the annual ranking and career ranking of the "The World's Most Influential Scientists in 2023" list published by Stanford University.
To date, Nanomaterials Research Group (Nanolab) has published more than 150 Q1 and Q2 manuscripts and filed 2 international and 6 national patents on the synthesis and application of nanomaterials. We have completed 1 Tübitak 1003 (Primary Subjects R&D Funding Program) project, 1 COST project, 4 Tübitak 1001 (The Scientific and Technological Research Projects Funding Program) projects. 2 Tübitak 1001 (The Scientific and Technological Research Projects Funding Program) project is still continuing.
5 PhD and 10 MSc, Theses primarily on nanomaterials have been completed under supervision of our group members.
As of right now, academic publications with high impact value have been published by project-based collaborations with both domestic and foreign universities and institutions, including those in Turkey such as Istanbul technical University, Sabancı University, Atılım University, 19 Mayıs University, and Anadolu University and overseas such as Sunchon National University, S. Korea and the University of Erlangen, Germany.
